Are You at Risk?
Long considered a man’s disease,
HIV/AIDS is a rapidly growing public health problem among
women. HIV/AIDS remains among the leading causes of death
for U.S. women ages 25-44. Among African American Women
in this same age group, AIDS was the third leading cause
of death in 1998.
The increasing proportion of adolescent
and adult women with HIV and AIDS in the United States (U.S.)
demands a renewed commitment to prevention efforts targeted
to women. Between 1985 and 2001, the proportion of AIDS
cases among adolescent and adult women reported in the U.S.
has grown more than three-fold, from seven percent in 1985
to 26 percent in 2001. Moreover, heterosexual contact has
steadily accounted for an increasing proportion of HIV infections
among women. Women of color representing over 80% of the
reported AIDS cases in 2001 are especially hard hit by HIV
and AIDS and younger women are increasingly at higher risk
for HIV/AIDS.
